What Is Cone Bending?

What Is Cone Bending?

Cone bending is a specialist metal forming process that shapes flat sheet metal or plate into a conical form – a structure that gradually narrows from a wide base to a smaller top. It is an essential fabrication technique widely applied across industries requiring cone-shaped components.

How Does Cone Bending Work?

Unlike standard cylindrical rolling, which produces radially uniform tubes or cylinders, cone bending involves forming metal so that one end has a larger radius than the other. This creates a tapered, conical profile. The process typically involves:

- Pre-cutting the metal into a segment of a circle, which is then shaped into a cone.

- Rolling the sheet along a variable radius, meaning each edge follows a different curve.

- Using specialised conical bending rollers or press brakes configured for angled forming.

This method requires precise setup and handling to maintain consistent wall thickness and prevent distortions or material defects.

Applications of Cone Bending

Cone bending is used in a wide range of sectors, including:

-  Food and chemical processing – for hoppers, silos, funnels, and tanks.

- Energy and ventilation systems – including chimney stacks, ducting, and exhaust components.

- Architecture and construction – for contemporary roofing, cladding, and bespoke decorative structures.

- Transport and heavy industry – including tapered pipe ends, reducers, and transitional components.

The Importance of Precision

Cone bending is a demanding process. Small inaccuracies in cutting, rolling or alignment can result in visible gaps, surface wrinkles, or weakened areas in the metal. Especially when bending eccentric cones (offset cones), where the centre of the smaller top diameter is not directly above the bigger bottom diameter centre. Properly designing a production process of an offset cone is a challenge in itself, that’s why it requires experienced engineers, operators and high-quality machinery to ensure reliable, repeatable results.
