Barnshaws Group were pleased to support B&K Hybrid Solutions Ltd with specialist heavy section bending for the redevelopment of 5 Chancery Lane, London. The project incorporated a series of curved primary steel elements within the structural frame, requiring precise geometric control and consistent material performance.
The scope included bending 305 x 305 x 137 Universal Columns about the minor (Y–Y) axis, along with Universal Beams ranging from 254 x 146 to 406 sections. In addition, 300 x 90 Parallel Flange Channels in a toe-in configuration were rolled to the specified radii. Several beams extended to approximately 15.5 metres in length and incorporated defined straight tangents to suit fabrication and connection detailing.
The works required bending about both the major (X–X) and minor (Y–Y) axes, demanding careful control to maintain web stability, minimise flange distortion and accurately manage spring-back. The 406 series beams were specified as British Steel manufacture to ensure material consistency and optimum bending characteristics, particularly important when processing heavier sections. Throughout production, strict dimensional checks were carried out to ensure compliance with fabrication tolerances.
All sections were processed under Barnshaws’ quality management procedures, with full traceability maintained to meet project specifications and UKCA requirements.
Commenting on the project, Greg North, Commercial Director at Barnshaws Group, said:
“5 Chancery Lane required precise heavy section bending across a range of substantial UB and UC beams. By combining technical expertise with high-capacity rolling equipment, we were able to deliver the curved structural elements accurately and in line with programme expectations.”
The successful completion of 5 Chancery Lane further strengthens Barnshaws’ reputation as a leading specialist in steel bending. As modern architecture continues to move beyond rigid straight lines towards organic forms and feature structures, curved steel has become a defining element of contemporary commercial design. Delivering these shapes without compromising structural performance requires precision engineering and advanced rolling expertise. By combining technical knowledge with high-capacity bending capability, Barnshaws transforms straight structural sections into striking curved steelwork for landmark developments across London and the UK.
