Three Barnshaws projects earn recognition at Structural Steel Design Awards 2017

Design Awards 2017

Three landmark building projects supported by Barnshaws Section Benders have been recognised in the 2017 Structural Steel Design Awards. Sponsored by the British Constructional Steelwork Association and Steel for Life, the awards recognised the Leadenhall Building in London, The Curve in Slough and the Hurlingham Club Racquet Centre in London, which have all benefitted from precision steel bending from Barnshaws. The awards were presented on the 4th October at the Museum of London.

Curved structural steel provides distinct advantages in the fact that it allows for free-flowing architectural design. This means that new buildings can offer more to the skyline, with organic aesthetics now replacing the typically boxy constructions of the 20th century. As one the most capable metal bending companies in the world, Barnshaws has been a key supplier of these sections to landmark curved steel structures across the UK. The awards recognise the importance of these sections in enabling innovative architecture and Barnshaws’ contribution in delivering these projects.

Award winners were whittled down from a shortlist of 17 projects, with efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics, sustainability and innovation the defining criteria. The Leadenhall Building was awarded the prestigious ‘Project of the Year’ award in its first year of running, a structure which features cambered beams from Barnshaws. The Curve and the Hurlingham Club Racquet Centre were singled out for special commendation by the awards panel along with four other projects.

Greg North, Commercial Director at Barnshaws, commented: “Recognition for the projects we support is always pleasing, but for multiple projects to be commended in these prestigious national awards is very exciting. We aim to offer the latest metal bending innovations to our customers, and help them to achieve the latest architectural designs, which is an initiative we feel these awards illustrate.”

The awards add lustre to a successful year for Barnshaws. The business has seen Scottish Parliament recognition of its Hamilton fabrications facility and the inclusion of Antony Gormley’s ‘Angel of the North’ and Anish Kapoors ‘Orbit’ on the new British passport design, both of which benefitted from Barnshaws’ expertise.
