Plate Rolling Information

THE PROCESS

Plate rolling is the technique of choice for any metals that are relatively thick.  Although sheets of various sizes and thicknesses may be used, this is the primary manufacturing process for metal bending large pieces of plate.

Roll bending uses either three or four rolls to feed and bend the plate to the desired curvature.  The arrangement of the rolls determines the exact bend of the work.  Different curves are obtained by controlling the distance and angle between the rolls.  Moveable rolls provide the ability to control the curve.  At Barnshaws we have a range of variable geometry roll bending machines that can cover a wide range of requirements.

Barnshaws Experience

Barnshaws added plate rolling services in 1979, since including plate rolling to Barnshaws the group have gone from strength to strength offering a first class service to all types of projects.

Barnshaws range of plate rollers range from 1000 long to 4500 long, rolling plates from 1mm to 100mm in thickness with the most modern plate rollers in Europe, Barnshaws can offer a first class finish.

Barnshaws plate rolling service is audited by SCCS to the ISO 9001:2015 standard this gives the customer confidence when ordering ensuring all attention to detail is taken when rolling plates.

Standard service for plate rolling can be flexible to meet customers’ requirements.  We offer either a complete supply or free issue service for each and every job, as well as offering quick turnarounds and the great service that has become synonymous with Barnshaws.

Product Range

The Barnshaw group offer plate rolling services over 3 sites. All sites offer multipurpose manufacturing facilities with overhead cranes offering lifting capacity up to 20 tonnes on some sites.

Our modern plate rolling machines enable us to roll plates up to 4500 long and rolling thickness up to 100mm depending on widths of plates plus radius and diameters. A proportion of thick plates can be pre-ended without an additional bending allowance to minimise waste when rolling.

Barnshaws plate rolling service can also offer an Edge prepping service with our modern machines. In this field we can offer machined, flame cut and plasma edges giving a first class finish to plate rolled products enabling the customer to finish their products faster and efficiently.

Material suitable for plate rolling include –

  • Carbon steels including S275,430B,P265GH,S355
  • Case hardened and tempered steels
  • Copper
  • Duplex & Super Duplex Steels 2205,S31803
  • High Chrome molly material
  • Stainless steels 304L , 316L , 321
  • Specialist steels Hastelloy & Inconel

All our materials are supplied by approved suppliers. All materials are certified with mill certification and our suppliers offer a number of tests on materials which include impact test, strain ageing test and through thickness test.

CE Marking

Barnshaws is the first metal bending company in the UK to have achieved total compliance with En1090-1; Requirements for conformity assessment of structural components, covering the supply of curved components to Execution Class 4 (Exc4). All our induction bent products are therefore fully CE marked for traceability.

Successfully assessed by SCCS, Barnshaws is able to assure customers that it has systems in place to ensure that all materials used in manufacture are correct for purpose, with a traceable audit path and that the Barnshaws product in question is fully compliant with its expected end use.

The CE Mark also confirms the competence, knowledge and skills of manufacturing staff and that manufacturing equipment is properly maintained and calibrated (where necessary).

Barnshaws invested a six-figure sum to achieve accreditation. Particular emphasis was placed on both the tensile and yield strength of products in the performance assessment of every aspect of the product range, using hundreds of samples fabricated to a variety of different radii.

The company has involved its entire supply chain in the CE Marking process, to ensure that all product components acquired from third parties are in full compliance in terms of measurement and performance.

All of Barnshaws’ five UK operations have been audited by SCCS during the accreditation process.
