The Big One

Introduction

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is home to the UK's tallest roller coaster, formerly known as the Pepsi Max Big One. Designed by Ron Toomer and constructed in 1994, this iconic attraction stands 235 feet tall. After nearly three decades, the coaster required a significant overhaul for longevity and safety.

During the 2020-2021 off-season, the roller coaster underwent a partial re-tracking to maintain its thrilling experience and enhance structural integrity. Taziker Industrial Ltd and Barnshaws Section Benders collaborated on the project, with Taziker managing the overhaul and Barnshaws handling the bending of nearly 120 curved tubes and tie bars critical for the coaster’s track. This partnership ensured high standards and timely completion, revitalizing the beloved ride for future generations.

Key Players & Roles

Taziker Industrial Ltd: As the primary contractor for the re-tracking project, Taziker was responsible for overseeing the refurbishment process. They managed the project's logistics, coordination, and execution, ensuring that all components met the high standards required for such a high-profile attraction.

Barnshaws Section Benders: Renowned for their expertise in metal bending, Barnshaws was contracted by Taziker to handle the intricate bending of nearly 120 curved tubes and cross-member tie bars. These components are critical for the coaster's track and structural integrity.

Technical Challenges & Solutions

The refurbishment of the roller coaster posed several technical challenges, particularly in the bending of the tie bars. These bars required precise tolerances to maintain the constant width of the track, essential for the coaster's safety and performance.

Barnshaws utilized their specialized steel bending machines to achieve the necessary precision. Their experience in handling large-scale projects enabled them to deliver the required parts on time and to exact specifications, facilitating the smooth progression of the renovation work.

Execution & Outcomes

The re-tracking project was executed during the off-season, minimizing disruption to the amusement park's operations. Barnshaws' expertise and advanced machinery were crucial in ensuring the project met its deadlines and quality standards. The successful completion of the re-tracking has extended the lifespan of the roller coaster, ensuring it continues to thrill visitors for many years to come.
