Manchester Victoria Station

Introduction

Manchester Victoria Station underwent a £44 million redevelopment project led by Network Rail to modernize its infrastructure. A crucial component of this transformation was the construction of a cutting-edge roof featuring 15 unique curved steel ribs. Barnshaws, a renowned tube and metal profile bending company with a production facility in Manchester, was entrusted with the task of fabricating these intricate structures.

Complex Fabrication Challenges

The project presented several challenges, including the need to bend steel plates up to 550mm wide and 50mm thick to various radii for the construction of each rib's larger sections. Barnshaws' engineering team adeptly managed these complexities, delivering curved components with precision and adhering to tight tolerances essential for smooth assembly and installation.

Solutions

Installation of the curved steel ribs required the use of large-scale cranes, including the UK's largest telescopic crane and a 750-tonne crawler crane. Maneuvering these cranes around live tracks beneath the new roof structure posed logistical challenges. Close coordination with Network Rail ensured efficient utilization of track-safe periods, facilitating on-schedule installation.

Barnshaws utilized their specialized steel bending machines to achieve the necessary precision. Their experience in handling large-scale projects enabled them to deliver the required parts on time and to exact specifications, facilitating the smooth progression of the renovation work.

Conclusion

Despite the inherent complexities of the project, collaboration between Severfield (UK), Barnshaws, and other stakeholders culminated in the successful delivery of a striking and functional roof structure for Manchester Victoria Station. The project stands as a testament to the expertise and innovative solutions employed by all involved, ensuring a bright and modern welcome for visitors to Manchester.
