Westfield Stratford City has finally opened its doors to eager shoppers, revealing the £1.45 billion development to the public for the first time. The project displays a fusion of contemporary design, featuring a significant amount of metal bending by Barnshaws Section Benders.
Containing 40,000 tonnes of structural steelwork, Barnshaws are proud to have been involved in the development and are responsible for all of the curving and cambering work throughout. The centre boasts 1.9 million sq ft of retail and leisure facilities, making it the largest urban shopping centre in Europe.
The complex sits at the gateway to London's 2012 Olympic park, where Barnshaws have also had a heavy involvement in metal fabrication, undertaking the metal bending work on sections for venues throughout the park.
As around 70% of the 10 million Olympic visitors are expected to pass through Westfield's Stratford City, the project has undoubtedly been a significant deal for Barnshaws. Craig Barnshaw said "the project completed a great year for us with Olympic projects after earlier supplying metal bending for the Olympic Aquatic Centre and the Olympic Velodrome"
